What impressed me the most was when players were getting cut from the team.  They showed grace and style.  I would say that 99% of these guys carried themselves with the utmost dignity and style.   (I don’t like to use the word “class” as it suggests that some people are better than others because of financial status and I know plenty wealthy individuals that are complete jerks and that isnt class).   I dont consider getting cut from these teams like you and me getting let go from our jobs.  Getting cut at this level is a whole different ball of wax.  This is getting cut from a dream job.  This is getting cut from a ton of money for something players and has been dreaming about and practicing for since they were little kids.  What impressed me is that even when getting cut from their boyhood dreams,  these guys handled themselves with absolute grace.   They thanked the coaches for the opportunity, explained the learned a ton in the process and were better people for the experience.   They didn’t make a scene, they shook hands, turned in their playbooks and walked out with their heads held high.   Unbelievable.   I wish people in corporate America handled themselves this well.     These were guys I wanted to work with.   These were guys who had positive attitudes and were not going to let set back affect them.  Simply put, grace and style in very difficult situations. On a prior season, the program profiled Ochocinco from the Cincinnati Bengals.   He didn’t really fit in my description above.   But that is the point I am driving to.   He stuck out, and although he is a great athletic player, he turned a few of folks off.   In corporate America, where there is a much bigger pool of candidates to choose from (vs the NFL where there are literally only a handful of franchise players and demand outweighs supply).   Corporate America can get another person with our particular skill sets pretty easily and don’t have to deal with a showboat. I am not naive.  I am sure they went home and had a shitty rest of the week, season, etc., but how they handled themselves in their professional environments was really impressive. It made me realize that this is a big piece of what it takes to become successful at this level.   You can’t just have muscles, quickness, etc., you need to have social skills and know how to handle yourself.   Similar to the corporate world, you won’t be truly successful unless you have the entire package.   The technical acumen associated with your job and the ability get along and handle stress is a very important aspect as well. Being limited to “x” amount of players forces choices to be made and this and brings truly the best out for each position. You are ultimately responsible for getting yourself to where you want to be in your career and in life. In order to take charge of your career, it’s important to learn how to control your fears. There are three main tips that I use to control my fears that we are going to share with you: Identify Manage Visualize Success In the previous articles in this series, we discussed how to identify your fears  and manage  your fears. This article will focus on how to visualize your success and make your career dreams a reality. Visualize your success. Visualization is a powerful thing. Both Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan have acknowledged that visualization has been a key to their great success. Visualization allows you to get into a positive mindset conducive to success. Attitude affects the actions you take, so before you start taking steps in your career and decide where you want to be you have to know who you need to be to get there. To determine this, we recommend a future self visualization. This is something that we do with all of our clients. A future self visualization consists of thinking about where you will be in 10-20 years. Who will you be and what qualities will you have? Which ones will help you be successful in reaching your career goals? (The future self visualization is excerpted from The Co-Active Coaching book, Henry Kimsey-House, Karen Kimsey-House, Phillip Sandahi, Laura Whitworth) Complete this sentence: I need to be _________ to reach my career goals. See some examples below: Brave Willing to take risks Confident Write down at least two qualities that you want to work on now. To help you find inspiration, think about someone you know who demonstrates at least one of these qualities well. Determine how you can imitate them in practical ways. Once you know who you need to be, it’s time to visualize where you want to be. There are at least three key factors to consider: Fulfillment. This is the meaning, or reward you get from your job. Determine what that would mean for you personally. Examples of fulfillment are a sense of accomplishment or the impact you have on others. Enjoyment. This represents the extra things you get to do at your job- the icing on the cake. Examples of enjoyment are traveling or mentoring. Strengths. These are the talents and skills that you use at your job. Are you using them on a regular basis currently? It’s important to make sure you are using the strengths you enjoy using. Many times career burnout comes from not using enough of the right strengths. Take some time to think about these three factors at your current job or industry. Are you currently satisfied with the levels of fulfillment, enjoyment, and strengths that you use? If not, what changes do you need to make? You may find that a few small adjustments are all you need, or you may determine that you need to make a career transition. However, don’t wait to find these factors in the future. Employers will typically conduct a background check before theyre about to make an offer. They may be conducting a background check on a handful of candidates theyre considering making an offer to. Its impossible to know if youre the only one theyre consideringor if there are several other contenders theyre running a background check on.How long after a background check can you expect an offer?Its impossible to give an exact time frame but you should hear something within a week or two after a background check.It takes anywhere from two to five days to conduct a background check. The hiring manager would then usually need a few days to make a final decision or put together an offer.Dont just wait for the offer!Although a background check is a good sign that youre being seriously considered for the job, dont sit back and wait for the offer. Keep applying to as many positions as youre qualified for.Remember that most employers automatically screen your resume with Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software. Past employmentThey may be checking to verify that all of your experience listed matches your records. Make sure that all of the dates and company names/titles listed on your resume are accurate. Many job seekers stretch their employment dates to avoid having gaps on their resume. EducationThe employer may also verify that you earned the degree(s) listed on your resume or application. Lying about your education is a serious offense that could get you in trouble so ensure that the education section of your resume is accurate and up to date.3. Criminal recordThis is straight forward most employers will check your criminal record before making an offer.They are checking for: violent offenses sex crimes fraud or embezzlement felony convictions4.
